Pepper

Pepper should be black, and freshly and very coarsely ground.

If you can't be bothered with mortar and pestle, or a pair of pliars or a couple of rocks, be very careful in your choice and tuning of pepper grinders. Peugeot mechanisms are best. Whatever mechanism, loosen it to to the point that the corns are about to escape, and grind with downwards pressure on the mechanism.
